Description

One morning in February (2020) I looked out the window toward the east and was rewarded with this magnificent solar pillar. I yelled at my wife, Denise, to come see and we both took several images with our cell phones. We had to be quick because the pillar only lasted about ten to fifteen minutes in total and maybe only five minutes at its peak. Denise had recorded the best shot, so I took it and processed it into the image posted here. Sun pillars are caused by flat, plate-like hexagonal ice crystals in the atmosphere reflecting sunlight.
